“Back on a bike from my 25th Dakar”
Franco Picco is a familiar face in the bivouac of the Dakar since he made his debut in 1985 and finished with a superb third place. Since then he was on the podium in 1988 and 1989 and he won the marathon class in 2010. He also enjoyed the 4 wheels, in particular in the years 2000 and 2002, where he finished respectively 36th and 48th overall. With 12 Dakar participations in the bike category, 5 in the car, 1 on a quad and 6 as an assistance team, for Franco Picco there is always a good excuse to compete a Dakar. Last season he raced with the quad to celebrate his 60th birthday, this year he is back on a bike for an important milestone: 25th Dakar! Not only, as an experienced Dakar rider he will race in the toughest category: the malle moto, where no assistance is allowed. Mechanic is his daily bread as he is also the preparer of his bike which is equipped with a special racing kit “made in Franco Picco”.
“Last year I competed on a quad, but I was not really satisfied because in a way it is more comfortable as you are seated but it is too slow so you always finish the stage very late. For this reason, for my special milestone of 25 Dakar I will be back on a bike. This will be my 19th as a competitor while I did the remaining 6 as an assistance team. Every excuse is good, what shall I make up next year? I will compete in the marathon class, a category that I won back in 2010 and for the first time in the Malle Moto category. It's a question of budget, but I also like the idea to compete in this special category that has its own palmares. I aim at doing well, and why not try to go for the win? As usual, I have prepared my bike with a special racing kit so a mechanic would not even know where to put the hands.”
