“On the Dakar, anything can happen”
With more experience, a better team structure and still the same motivation, Rui Oliveira returns to the Dakar after a 6-year absence. The 38-year-old off-road specialist could be one of the good surprises of the rally. Part of the CRN Competition team alongside his compatriot and friend Fausto Mota, Oliveira certainly hopes to better the 53rd spot he clinched back in 2011. Thirteenth of the last Merzouga Rally where all the best bikers were present he certainly has the speed but knows that the Dakar is a whole different story.
"I would love to do the Dakar every year. Last year I had already planned to be present but the project ended up aborting. After this setback we gathered all the energies to be present at this year's event. Since December 2015 everything has been done in support of this goal. The goal now is to finish and to get a better result than the one I got on my first appearance. I would like to end up in the top 30, but I know it will be quite difficult. The competitive level is getting higher, but we will try to reach that goal. The Dakar is a very tough race where anything can happen. I have more experience in terms of off-road rallies and I have a better structure and bike, which always offers other conditions. I have a certain affinity and I speak almost every week with Hélder Rodrigues. I also have a good connection with Rúben Faria and Mário Patrão, two riders with whom I usually train. I learn a lot from everyone so that when I'm in competition I make the fewest mistakes." (motosport.com.pt)
