“This time we don't have to stop”
The Dakar career of Ton van Genugten is like a dream. The first time he entered with his own team he finished in eleventh. The next year he was competing as the fast assistance for Gerard de Rooy and finished fifth: probably the fastest assistance of all times. And now Van Genugten and his regular navigator Anton van Limpt are on their own again. Still part of Team De Rooy, but this time they can take the opportunity to run for a top result. In daily life Van Genugten, father of three, runs his part of the family business, specialized in processing and transporting manure and fertilizer. Van Limpt is the owner of a company that develops and produces printed circuit boards. Bernard der Kinderen, who won the Dakar at the side of Hans Stacey in 2007, is the mechanic on board of the Iveco Trakker.
“Finishing fifth last year was like a dream, especially considering we had to wait a few times to let Gerard de Rooy pass as it was our task to stay behind him. This time we don't have to wait. We can go for our own chances. It's very exciting. We'll keep the same approach as last year, except for the waiting. I've learned a lot last year, driving in the front group. For example that it might be better to solve a situation driving instead of braking. To me the Dakar is a way of release, like stepping into a different world for a few weeks. And in this different world I've met several other worlds as well, because driving in the back of the field is completely different to driving with the front runners.”
